Mario
Workforce Challenge:
Mario was referred to the SELACO Workforce Development Board by the national charity, Prison Advice and Care Trust (PACT). Mario had previous
experience in plumbing and repairs, but was now looking to find funding to take the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Exam to pursue his
dream of becoming an airplane mechanic. Mario’s biggest challenge was having a record when looking for work.
Workforce Solution:
SELACO WDB not only paid for Mario’s exams, but also offered much more. His career counselor referred him to PACT, he attended the job search
workshops and “Steps to Economic and Personal Success”, received résumé assistance, motivation and the mutual support of Job Club members and
staff. During this time, Mario diligently studied for his exams and created stacks of flashcards to help him memorize the material. Sometimes he
struggled to remain positive in the face of job rejections and other disappointments, but Mario kept moving forward.
Outcome & Benefits:
All of his hard work paid off when Mario impressively passed both of his exams with flying colors, scoring in the upper 90’s. Mario continued
to look for work and applied for a position he found online. He was called in for an interview and the very next day he was offered a full-time
position as an Aviation (AP) Mechanic Power Plant at a Los Angeles Airport starting at $18.00 an hour. Mario advises other job seekers, “Don’t
give up. Set that goal and focus on the positive.”
